Hanson, Michael Stipe, Boxer Rebellion + More Team for Japan Earthquake Telethon

Posted on Apr 5th 2011 12:30PM by Dan Reilly

In recent years, Hanson have used their celebrity to bring awareness to African poverty and to raise money for AIDS research and treatment. In March, Isaac, Taylor and Zac took time out of their hectic SXSW schedule to organize a telethon for victims of the the devastating Japan earthquake and tsunami.

With a lineup featuring R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, the Boxer Rebellion, Charlie Mars, Widespread Panic's JoJo Herman, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., North Mississippi Allstars, An Horse, Andrew WK, Tracy Bonham and more, the SXSW 4 Japan concert lasted 12 hours and raised over $100,000 for the American Red Cross.

Because there is so much work still left to do in Japan, the band is re-airing the telethon on Tuesday, April 5 at 1PM ET. "The stream was all about taking whatever action we could, and using the best tools available to us: Music and our relationships with so many amazing artists at SXSW," Taylor Hanson tells Spinner. "We were blown away not only by the artists who contributed but by the amazing amount of love and support for our friends in need in Japan, and the desire from so many to give their time and effort.

"There is still a lot to do but we are hopeful that the event will continue to spread the word, encouraging support and attention from music fans to do what they can, small or large."

Check out the telethon below for some rare, intimate performances and more information on how you can help aid victims of the tragedy in Japan. You can also head to Amazon to purchase a 47-song SXSW 4 Japan compilation, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross' recovery efforts.
