Music lovers, get ready to love American pop-rock band Hanson all over again as they make their much-awaited return to Asia as part of their "Shout It Out World Tour."

Formed by brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac in their native town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Hanson has been making music together for nearly two decades. In 1997, the release of their first major label album Middle of Nowhere introduced their out-of-the-blue, soul-inspired brand of American pop-rock ‘n’ roll to the world. The album sold over 10 million copies worldwide and earned the band three Grammy nominations.

The band is best known for their phenomenal hit single "MMMBop," which reached #1 in 27 countries. Their other hits from the same album include "Where’s the Love," "I Will Come To You" and "Weird." Hanson released the Christmas album "Snowed In" in 1997 and another studio album in 2000, "This Time Around," with hit singles "This Time Around" and "If Only" before they launched their own independent record company in 2003. Under 3CG Records, they released the album "Underneath" in 2004 with hit singles "Penny & Me" and "Lost Without Each Other." Their independent moves paid off, building a brand that has grown with successful independent albums, singles and tours, during a decade when music sales plummeted. In addition, alongside the launch of their 2007 album "The Walk," they championed calls for action on humanitarian efforts, galvanizing tens of thousands of people around the world to participate in barefoot one-mile walks to fight HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa.

On their fifth studio album, "Shout It Out," they deliver a powerful group of soulful, melodic tunes that will leave you with a contagious sense of optimism for the future and welcomed reminiscence for American rock ‘n’ roll. "Shout It Out" is a collection of finely crafted, R&B-flavored pop-rock, a homage to the music that inspired Hanson when they started out.

"The anatomy of our band is similar to a ‘70s rock band – white guys from the Midwest who grew up listening to ‘50s and ‘60s soul, who are mixing guitars, with vintage keys and melodic songs," Taylor Hanson says.

Adds Isaac, "We’ll always be a bit rootsy ‘cause it’s in the Oklahoma soil, but what we’ve never stopped aspiring to is the great songwriters and performers who struck a chord with us first, that early rock and roll and soul music from Chuck Berry to Otis Redding. We’ve rediscovered that aspiration on this record. There’s a little more swing and a little more air."

While "Shout It Out" looks back in time musically, it also represents forward movement for Hanson. "We love playing classic songs," says Zac Hanson. "But we never sat down and wrote our version of what that sounds like until now."

"Shout It Out" showcases not only the music of Hanson, but many aspects that have allowed the band to survive and stay relevant. "The album is about being alive, and the contrasts we are faced with," Taylor says. "We’ve come from a generation leaving the analog world and moving into an interconnected culture at risk of forgetting where it came from. This album tries to put together those pieces, but with a bit of melody to back it up."

While the new album draws inspiration from the past, Hanson is looking to an exciting new era for the band. Their insatiable desire to innovate with technology – seen in their plans to incorporate mobile live streaming video both onstage and off – is building an even stronger fan connection.

In the mid 90′s, Hanson “MMMBOP” fever swept the nation as the three brother band reached insane heights of popularity. The Hanson band sensation eventually died down, but for Pittsburgh Pirates fans the fever may soon return in the form of Alen Hanson fever. A year ago, Alen Hanson might not have even been a top 100 prospects in the Pirates farm system. His signing bonus is unknown, which generally means it’s a small, insignificant amount. Signing bonuses are a strong indicator on how highly thought of a signee is and therefore Hanson was buried under several other middle infielders in the Pirates farm system who had signed for bigger bonuses. Low level middle infielders head of Hanson included names include Johnathon Barrios and Jodenali Carvajal and, who got bonuses of 250K and 350K respectively, and Jorge Bishop, who had already found some success playing stateside.

Now, after a breakout year in 2011, Hanson is ahead of all those players on a prospect depth chart. The biggest factor in facilitating Hanson’s upward move was his production last year. As a 19-year old, Hanson put up a .263/.352/.429 line for the Rookie League GCL Pirates in his first year stateside. Looking deeper, Hanson’s average was the only statistic that wasn’t very impressive. Hanson showed solid power, postingan ISO of .162 which included 22 of his 52 hits going for bases. An isolated patience of .89 is also a solid number for any player, but it’s value is amplified for a middle infielder, especially one who’s both young and from Latin America, where good plate discipline seems to be less prevalent. Speaking of middle infield, perhaps more telling is the fact that as soon as he started playing in the GCL, the Pirates chose to start him at shortstop instead of the aforementioned Barrios and Carvajal, who got stuck at second base and third base instead. That’s a strong indicator of how an organization views a prospect or prospects. Therefore, all signs point to the fact that the Pirates consider Alen Hanson a very good prospect and ahead of Barrios or Carvajal.

Looking at Hanson, that might seem surprising. He’s diminutive to say the least. Hanson stands at 5’11, which is a decent height. However, he only weighs about 150 lbs. To detractors, that may be a negative for Hanson, but his small, lean frame allows him to be incredibly quick. That quickness allowed him to steal 24 bases last year in only 52 games and more importantly, it gives Hanson plenty of range as shortstop. Add in quick reactions, a solid glove, and an ample arm, and Hanson should be at least an above-average defensive shortstop, especially since there is little risk of him being forced to move off the position. Referring back to that .162 ISO his put up last year, it looks even more impressive when it becomes evident it’s produced by a guy who only weighs 150 lbs. 5’11 isn’t tall, but Hanson should be able to add muscle and that means he could maintain that level of power as he progresses up the minor league ladder with even a chance to add a bit more pop. Perhaps most impressive was that plate discipline. Hanon walked 22 in 234 plate appearances in the GCL while only striking out 34 times over that same span of plate appearances. That calculates out to a BB rate of 9.0% and K rate of 14.5%, two excellent numbers.

Overall, Hanson has a long way to go to make the majors. He’s only 19 years old and won’t even turn 20 until October. The highest level of baseball he’s played is 3 games at the Pirates Short Season affiliate State College. That’s where he will probably start next season. If Hanson’s able to maintain his plate discipline, continue to prove his glove, and maybe hit the ball more consistently and with more power, he could shoot up prospect rankings and really put his name on the map. For a team such as Pittsburgh, who lacks an elite shortstop prospect and only has mediocre shortstop prospect depth, that would be a welcome development. Pirates fans and Pirates management alike will both be crossing their fingers and hoping for a return of Hanson fever.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6438691574969981988.post-13596705305752468122012-03-18T21:24:00.001-03:002012-03-18T21:24:33.718-03:00Woody Guthrie is celebrated with a concert in Tulsa, Okla. The late Woody Guthrie gets a rare tribute in his conservative home state as Arlo Guthrie, Jackson Browne, Rosanne Cash, more play the Brady Theater in Tulsa
In the 2008 presidential election, Oklahoma was the only state in the U.S. in which every county voted for the Republican ticket.

As different speakers noted during the symposium that preceded the evening concert, even though Guthrie was championed by American socialists and communists in the 1930s and '40s, he never joined their parties. "He was a 'commonist,'" said national radio commentator, author and former Texas politician Jim Hightower.

Western music specialist and Guthrie scholar Guy Logsdon said Guthrie's politics essentially came down to one issue: "More than anything, he hated greed," Logsdon said during Saturday's symposium. "He believed that greed was the worst thing ever — worse than communism, worse than fascism."

"Most of his critics are political," Arlo Guthrie said later, during a quick stop for a sandwich near Erick, Okla., touted on a roadside billboard as the home of another Oklahoma musical wag, Roger Miller. "He doesn't have literary critics — nobody says the man couldn't write. Nobody says the songs are no good.

"My dad told me to thank people for who they are," he said. "There's a balance in the world, and if somebody's being stupid, don't criticize 'em for it — if they stop being who they are, you might have to take their place."

Still, fans' efforts to celebrate him in his native Okemah gathered enough steam to launch an annual Woody Guthrie music festival only 15 years ago. But elsewhere around the nation and the world, he is being celebrated in multiple ways for his centennial year.

A three-CD boxed set released last month, "Woody at 100," collects previously unreleased recordings discovered by the Smithsonian Folkways label, where Guthrie did much of his recording.

Dozens of other Guthrie celebrations are on the books this year, many independently organized. The cornerstone events put together by the Guthrie family and the Grammy Museum include a panel Thursday at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas.

In Salinas, where Guthrie spent time while living among migrant workers in California's Central Valley in the 1940s, the annual Steinbeck Festival on May 3-5 will host a salute to Guthrie.

And that's just in the U.S. There also will be extensive salutes to his music through the year in Canada, Germany and Austria.

As Hightower pointed out during his talk, "Musicians continue to keep Woody's music alive because Woody's music keeps them alive."

randy.lewis@latimes.com

The "This Land is Your Land: A Woody Guthrie Centennial Concert" heralded a sold-out crowd on Saturday night at a historic music venue nearly as old as Guthrie himself, The Brady Theater.

Oklahoma champion and author Michael Wallace opened the night with the words of the Okemah native and late folk icon Woody Guthrie: "I hate a song that makes you feel as though you're not any good. ... The songs that I sing are made up for the most part by all sorts of folks just about like you."

Indeed, Guthrie's son Arlo then took the stage to a standing ovation and rowdy cheers as he lit into a version of his father's "Talking Dust Bowl Blues."

Fans young and old, in dinner gowns and in jeans, button-down business shirts to flannel squeezed into seats for the once-in-a-lifetime lineup of iconic American musicians, all paying tribute to the man who inspired them.

The night featured an energetic and eclectic mix of Woody Guthrie's son Arlo Guthrie, and John Mellencamp, Rosanne Cash, The Flaming Lips, Jackson Browne, Hanson, Old Crow Medicine Show, Tim O'Brien, Jimmy LaFave and more.

"What a pleasure to be celebrating the birthday of Woody Guthrie right here in Tulsa tonight," added Old Crow Medicine Show as aThe group sang "one for the ladies"-- Guthrie's "Union Maid."

"You can't scare me, I'm sticking to the union," the band chanted. Fans clapped in time and hollered with happy support.

Tim O'Brien joined the act for a bouncing version of "The Sun Jumped Up," with harmonica and banjo and mandolin singing along behind him.

"Thank you, Woody fans," was a popular refrain from the stage throughout the evening. "It's a great honor," was another.

Woody Guthrie's little sister, Mary Jo Guthrie Edgmon, visited in a soft pink dress, huge smile and accepted a historical marker plaque to present to her and brother Woody's home town and the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in Okemah.

"Gosh, this is such an honor and I'm just breathless," she said. "I bet directly or indirectly, I know every single one of y'all in here," she said, then mentioned her extensive school programs about woody and the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival in their home town.

Arlo Guthrie returned to the stage, this time with Tulsa band of brothers Hanson.

"Going Down The Road Feeling Bad" featured Arlo on guitar and Harmonica, Isaac Hanson strumming beside him, and Zac and Taylor made it four, harmonizing perfectly. Fans clapped in time. The brothers grinned ear-to-ear as they sang.

Jackson Browne played the tune "You Know the Night,"which he wrote from a poem written by Woody Guthrie about his mother, Marjorie. ... The third standing ovation.

Oklahoma City psychedelic rocker the Flaming Lips followed with a small symphony of iPads and other unconventional electronic doo-dads, belting out an electronic-backed version of "Vigilante Man." "The thing about this song is that Woody must have experienced it, then 20 minutes later, the song was written. It was just him, talking about what happened."

They interpreted the song in a way that Guthrie probably thought was impossible to imagine in his day, adding depth and emotion and even whimsy. Unexpected guests included composer David Amram and Native American poet Joy Harjo.

Frontman Wayne Coyne grabbed an acoustic guitar as Browne returned to join the band for "Along in the Sun and the Rain." It was an odd pairing, perhaps, but one with a huge crowd response, one of the most visceral of the night. Some in the crowd laughed at the pairing when it was announced. The quickly sat rapt at the larger-than-life story that pulsed over the theater.

They then segued into the official rock song of Oklahoma, their "Do You Realize?," an anthem to love and happiness.

John Mellencamp won hearts with his song, rolling-beat version of "This Train in Bound for Glory," voice rough-hewn and sentiment tried-and-true.

"I Think we all know the words to this one," Mellencamp said as he chugged into a popular favorite, "Do-Re-Mi." Next, he said, "I flat-out stole this song from Woody," before he launch into his hit "Pink Houses" that had fans on their feet, dancing and singing every single world in unison. ... And another standing, screaming ovation.

Oklahoma's own Jimmy LaFave dedicated "Woody's Road," a tune by late Red Dirt music icon Bob Childers, to "Oklahoma's most important native son." His Spartan set included just him and an accordion player. The lyrics were stark yet filigreed with hope. The capacity crowed swayed in their sets and tapped their feet.

The night got bigger as Rosanne Cash joined him. She said little as she sauntered to her mic. A solemn "Deportees" told the tale of rotting fields, and the plight of migrant workers Juan and Roselita -- and so many nameless others -- who died while being "chased like rustlers, like outlaws, like thieves."

The stories told Saturday night were working man odes of human beings in human conditions, performed with with humility and respect. Fans were at times rapt, at others filled to bursting with hoots and cheers, tears and laughter.

Musician John Leventhal joined Cash for another tale, this one of "Pretty Boy Floyd." Cash's sweet yet potent twang filled the venue like honeysuckle at night as she sang of the villain's last days in Oklahoma.

She followed with another song, one her father, Johnny Cash, told her was be of 100 songs she had to know, "Motherless Children." She earned yet another standing ovation.

Author Wallace stepped in again to remind us all, "The word is the music and the people are the song."

The Del McCoury band followed with their versions of "Philadelphia Lawyer" and and the effervescent, fiddle-filled "Pastures of Plenty" and the sing-along with Tim O'Brian, "So Long, it's Been Good to Know Yuh."

Arlo Guthrie returned again, saying merely, "What a night!" as he introduced his family, aka backing band, and did a Leadbelly tune, "Alabama Bound."

"One thing I loved about my dad's songs is that ... If you didn't read the paper, you could listen to his songs and still know exactly what happened."

He played the "1913 Massacre," about 73 children killed in greedy retribution to miners by mine-owning "thugs." He followed With the touching tribute "I Hear Your Song Again."

Mellencamp returned to perform his favorite tune with Arlo Guthrie, "Oklahoma Hills" to stomping feet and staccato hand claps.

"'Way down yonder in the Indian Nation /

Ridin' my pony on the reservation /

In those Oklahoma hills where I was born/

Now, 'way down yonder in the Indian Nation /

A cowboy's life is my occupation /

In those Oklahoma hills where I was born."

Then, the stage filled with the night's musical guest as they sang "Hard Traveling," each line passed to another artists, round-robin style before sliding into Woody Guthrie's most well-known tune, "This Land is Your Land,"with a surprise visit by Green Country's own Red Dirt Rangers and and even Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora.

The heartfelt parting kiss goodnight was from Arlo Guthrie, singing a tune his father wrote on his deathbed named "My Peace," very nearly like a lullaby from the grave.
If you ask Wayne Coyne, frontman for Oklahoma City psychedelic rock act the Flaming Lips, he'll say he and Woody Guthrie definitely have one thing in common.

Stubbornness.

Guthrie's struggle as a musician was probably a lot harder than his has been, Coyne says, even though music critics often call the Lips one of the most influential rock acts of the past 20 years.

The Flaming Lips have done everything their own way.

But Guthrie did it first, and he did it on his own, Coyne said.

"I don't always want to do these things by myself. I think it was probably part of his struggle, as well. I think he probably thought, 'I can just do it better myself.' " Coyne said during a recent telephone interview from his home in Oklahoma City.

"Whereas, a lot of times it appears that it's just me doing things, but I've got this great, great band and managers and all these sorts of things that are opening every door before I even get there sometimes."

Those things just didn't exist in Guthrie's time, when the musician grabbed a guitar and often sang to down-and-out "Okies" in impoverished work camps. Okies, who had fled their home state with hopes of also escaping poverty, found themselves engulfed in near-servitude.

Guthrie helped lay a groundwork that allowed musicians to speak their minds while accurately reflecting what was around them.

That legacy's worth celebrating, Coyne said, which is why his band was determined to perform at Saturday's "This Land is Your Land: A Woody Guthrie Centennial Concert" at the Brady Theater.

The Lips join Woody's son Arlo Guthrie, as well as John Mellencamp, Rosanne Cash and many others as they play Guthrie's tunes in tribute.

"We're like, 'c'mon, we live here and we're still alive!' and for as cool as it is, to have artists come from all over the place, well, we live here. Let's do this!"

The Lips grabbed friend Jackson Browne for Saturday's performance. They'll do a version of Guthrie's "Vigilante Man," Coyne said.

"I think we'll get there and meet people and make friends. The fellows are all such good musicians, I'm hoping we'll be able to do a couple of things." So, in usual Lips fashion, expect the unexpected. Also, in the spirit of Guthrie, expect a coming together across genre lines, political lines and working-class lines.

For one night, his dream of community and "our land" will expand to encompass an array of people, all under one roof.

"The main thing is that Woody's always standing up for the little guy - the people who are being oppressed," Coyne said. "It's not just a civil rights thing. He's always standing on the side of the people."

It's more than just his protest music that Coyne loves about Guthrie, who was born in 1912 in Okemah and died at age 55 in 1967.

It's about art. More specifically, it's about creation.

Guthrie wouldn't wear spangles and call himself a cowboy.

The Lips aren't a commercial rock act in any way. Like Guthrie, they're often seen as outsiders.

Guthrie was unfettered. He often created daily - in books, diaries, through drawings, poetry and in other ways. That sort of spontaneity, driven by a sort of stubbornness, or a determination to create, as Coyne calls it, inspires him.

"His music sometimes is not really music in the sense - it's usually just him with a beat-up guitar and he's ranting about some situation that, in his time, was happening right then."

It's a tradition that many musicians are returning to, he said. The bureaucracy of the music industry is breaking down. The artist can create almost anything "and have it pressed to a record in a week," he said of many of the projects he's been working on lately, including a box set of musical collaborations the Lips are preparing for a Record Store Day release April 21.

In some ways, Coyne has flipped the simplicity of Guthrie's recording days into modern times.

"He lived in more of a one-dimensional, 'I'm Woody, here's what I do,' straightforward time. Plus, I'm old and we're successful and we've had a lot of time to do what I'd like to do."

And, where Guthrie traveled the states, the Lips travel the globe.

"We're all over the world. America, Japan, Europe ... you just have this traveling machine. A time machine. Which is good. It's fun."

But they're stubborn. The Lips, like Guthrie, have forged a reputation for doing things because they want to do them. That's really all the reason they need.

Musicians talk about Guthrie’s legacy

On Saturday, a genre-bending blend of influential music artists will pay homage to the man they believe helped make their own careers possible.

It's more than that, though.

It's about a legacy that lives on for generations - the right as an American to speak one's mind and make a difference in the world.

"Woody Guthrie believed in the common plight and telling stories about it and connecting to people in that way," Hanson member Taylor Hanson said in a recent telephone interview. "I mean, what better legacy for music to have than to speak to that?"

Hanson joins musicians including Guthrie's son Arlo and John Mellencamp, Rosanne Cash, The Flaming Lips, Jackson Browne and more as they perform Guthrie's timeless odes to the working class.

"There has always been room for shaking off the shackles of conformity and questioning the system and wondering if it could be or should be better," Hanson said. "That is a really, really important part of what makes this country a unique one. ... I think his best traits were that this is a country and a place where opportunity and the ability to live a better life is possible."

Guthrie lived through the Dust Bowl and performed countless songs to even more faceless migrant workers. He sang about an America in which all people were accepted and welcomed and treated fairly.

Singer-songwriter Mellencamp admits his own career was made possible by people like Guthrie, who died when Mellencamp was a boy. His own songs about the working class are inspired by the folk icon.

"Yeah, and the art of songwriting from Guthrie, his ability to say so much with so few words and so few chord changes ... Guthrie was a huge influence on me," he said. "I love his roustabout ways. As a young man, I liked his womanizing and his brawling. There wasn't anything that Guthrie didn't do as a young man.

"That's the way art's made. ... He laid down a big footprint and said, 'Fill it!' "

And that's what the musicians at Saturday's concert at Brady Theater hope to do. They're banding together to play Guthrie's tunes in his home state, at a venue that's nearly as old as the musician would be if he were still alive.

Guthrie's own son, Arlo, marches to his father's legacy daily. Now in his 60s, he'd made his own life out of speaking (and singing) the feelings of the working man.

He thanks his dad.

"People still believe some of the things he was writing were important and good. As long as people believe in who he was, we'll be celebratin'," he said.

Saturday, musicians from multiple genres will join to cross boundaries they might not otherwise. Arlo Guthrie said that's a perfect tribute to Woody Guthrie's legacy.

"So the philosophy of gettin' together, to stand together, to put aside differences so that you can be strong is what he was singing about all his life."

Taylor Hanson agreed. "Art should always reflect the world around you. And a big part of our world is asking questions. ... And giving people songs to sing about it."

Learn the song before the Flaming Lips play it

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne says the band will perform Woody Guthrie's "Vigilante Man" with folk singer-songwriter Jackson Browne at Saturday's Guthrie centennial concert at Brady Theater.

Here are the lyrics.

'Vigilante Man'

Words and music by Woody Guthrie

Have you seen that vigilante man?

Have you seen that vigilante man?

Have you seen that vigilante man?

I been hearin' his name all over the land.

Well, what is a vigilante man?

Tell me, what is a vigilante man?

Has he got a gun and a club in his hand?

Is that is a vigilante man?

Rainy night down in the engine house,

Sleepin' just as still as a mouse,

Man come along an' he chased us out in the rain.

Was that a vigilante man?

Stormy days we passed the time away,

Sleepin' in some good warm place.

Man come along an' we give him a little race.

Was that a vigilante man?

Preacher Casey was just a workin' man,

And he said, "Unite all you working men."

Killed him in the river some strange man.

Was that a vigilante man?

Oh, why does a vigilante man,

Why does a vigilante man

Carry that sawed-off shot-gun in his hand?

Would he shoot his brother and sister down?

I rambled 'round from town to town,

I rambled 'round from town to town,

And they herded us around like a wild herd of cattle.

Was that the vigilante men?

Have you seen that vigilante man?

Have you seen that vigilante man?

I've heard his name all over this land.
But the trio's lead singer, Taylor Hanson, believes the band is what it is today because of the legacy Guthrie laid out long before he and his brothers were born.

“We're Oklahomans and Woody Guthrie is a major part of the fabric of music,” he said bluntly during a recent telephone interview. When asked to perform in Saturday's tribute concert by Guthrie's daughter, Nora, and the Grammy Museum, “It was a no-brainer, really.”

Hanson is more than a pop-rock juggernaut. The brothers, too, work outside of the “system” established by mainstream music, including their own 3CG Records. Just as Guthrie did.

Brothers Zac, Taylor and Isaac spend a lot of time working for basic human rights and needs. They walk the walk. Just like Guthrie.

They also know when civil disobedience is called for. Just like Guthrie.

A: The one thing that's interesting about us, of course, is our musical heritage is much more rock 'n' roll, much more soul music ... but there's just such a respect for Woody Guthrie and what role he's played, not only in music but in pop culture — the way he's influenced so many artists.

And, probably like a lot of people in our generation, we kind of discovered his musical followers (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen) before we really understood how important he was.

We've kind of gone back and just been in awe of his legacy. It's infinite.

He's a great American character and a great American artist and worth celebrating.

A: It is all under wraps right now because we're trying to be as deferential as possible since they are trying to maintain so much excitement and suspense.

One thing I do know is we'll probably be performing with one of the other artists. We love doing that. It's kind of a way of showing the audience that there's a community, and I feel like Woody Guthrie would have had a lot of people playing together with him.

James Bishop of Oxford, England, has made what he feels is a modest proposal.

What's not so modest is that he's made it every day for more than a year.

He wants Hanson at his wedding.

He and Jennie Tripp, both 26, expect about 90 at their wedding and close to 150 for the following reception on July 28.

They were engaged Jan. 19 of last year. The "Hanson at My Wedding" drive started about a month later. It's been going strong every day since they started a campaign of videos and messages via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Tumblr.

Now that's some serious commitment.

The publicity has won the band - and these fans - a lot of attention, Bishop said. This week, they struck the 380 mark on daily videos. They have about 169 to go, he said.

Videos show them singing the "A-Team" theme song while running in circles and casual chats with followers on their way home from pubs. Every one ends with the same plea.

Why videos? He and friend Chris Douch "decided on this as we are both writers and performers who have very little money and thought, 'We can't pay them in dollars, but we can pay them in our time.' After all, time is money and money is time ..."

If that's true, is their register ringing with time well spent?

They don't know.

Nor does Hanson brother Taylor Hanson, who commented on the UK friends' pleas during a recent interview with the Tulsa World.

"They are amazing. Amazing. You know, we've got some ideas for them. ... We know it (HAMW) exists and we respect the interest and really think it's cool. And, also, Hanson, the only weddings we've ever performed at were our own weddings," Taylor Hanson said.

"So, it's an effort that I admire. I saw them at the last shows we did in London. I said, 'Hey, I give you props for all the effort.' "

He sounded a twinge disappointed. "The scoop is that Hanson is cold-hearted. ...Which isn't true. It just seems that way."

Through their blog, Bishop and Douch have offered to cover air fare for the Tulsa trio.

The international media has picked up on the HAMW movement. One fan even crashed a TV interview with the band in Brazil - and asked if they'd play Bishop's wedding. The Hansons again praised Bishop's heart. The fan-reporter said the guys should play. The band didn't say much else about it.

"It was very surreal seeing my picture and video clips of me on Brazilian national television," he said.

The makings of a fan

Back in 2004, "Douch and I were working in a shop together when the CD 'Underneath' came in, which was their comeback album. We thought 'Hey, it's those 'Mmmbop' kids, must be a greatest hits' so we put it on to annoy the customers."

But they liked the music. More accurately, Bishop said, they loved it.

The friends played the album from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., every day they were at the store, and nearly were fired because of it.

"My fiancée is now a big fan through me," Bishop added. "My first memory with Jennie is telling her how great Hanson were and her rolling around in laughter. I only had one track to change her mind. I chose 'Penny and Me' and she never looked back."

Now they're all hooked - and a Hanson cover band is simply out of the question. Besides, he said, "Hanson tribute bands are a little thin on the ground at the moment."

True.

Bishop admits that they're all jokers, but they're "seriously serious" about getting the Tulsa-based band of brothers into their wedding.

He and friends met Hanson several times last year while the band was on tour.

"We waited outside each venue for them and spoke to them on numerous occasions," he said.

The responses from Zac, Isaac and Taylor has been encouraging but aloof, he said.

"It's been mixture of things, ranging from Isaac's 'Keep going, you never know!' To Zac's 'Maybe I should marry you, seems like we would get on pretty well!' "

So far, however, Bishop hasn't gotten any shout-outs from Hanson's official Twitter or other sites, he said.

But that won't stop him from trying. His message is getting heard - and people love it. His story's been picked up by Absolute Radio, American pop-rocker Wheatus, Perfect Wedding Magazine, Digital Spy, comedian Dave Hill, BBC Oxford and many more.

"My favorite moments (when meeting Hanson) were getting Zac to sign a 'Hanson at My Wedding' sticker without realizing, then getting Taylor to sign our banner. When he gave it back, we informed him if you shone a UV light on the banner, it was actually a binding legal contract."
When asked about Cyrus, Taylor’s answer was immediate. “Focus on music, less on boobs.” Ouch! The Jonas Brothers were up next — a band that bears plenty of parallels to the 90′s idols: three brothers playing pop rock and being featured on tween girls’ posters. “They seem like they’re actually trying to focus and look at longevity,” Taylor said, crediting the JoBros. “One’s doing the solo project, one’s doing the Broadway thing … they’re making the right choices.”

And what about the Biebs? “Honestly, I think he’s on a really good trajectory,” Isaac said. “He seems to have a really good voice, and so that ultimately becomes about picking the right songs.” As for Bieber’s lady love, Selena Gomez, the guys only had glowing reviews. “I think she’s really talented,” Taylor said earnestly, accompanied by “yeahs” and nods from his brothers. “She’s got a lot going for her. She seems to be very composed, and that says a lot.”

The guys had some different views on the hair-whipping whippersnapper, Willow Smith. “Talk to your dad!” Taylor said. We agree: Will Smith knows his stuff.

The Tulsa-bred MmmBoppers had general advice as well. “In all cases, know what you want to do in the first place, stick to your guns and watch your business,” Taylor said.

“Find mentors, whether it be songwriters, artists or whatever it is, and talk to them,” Isaac added. “Always try and learn something.”

Zac, who had been relatively quiet for most of the interview, chimed in as well. “Isaac offers a mentoring service,” Zac deadpanned. “It’s only about $150 an hour.” We’re just surprised none of them advised on putting stars’ names on a Pilsner.

Don’t panic! That's just how long they've been playing together. It’s been a mere 15 years since the infectious, ubiquitous “MMMBop" was unleashed. Whew!

Fuse’s Elaine Moran sat down with Hanson to talk about their 20th anniversary, letting fans choose which albums they play in concert and fatherhood (all three are dads now!).

Looking back, youngest bro Zac (26) claims that Hanson was “never a trendy band,” even at the height of MMMania. “If you listen to our records they sound like they’re influenced by the Jackson 5 and Motown, and today it’s still the same. There's Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Katy Perry and those records, and then there's Hanson over here making Motown-influenced rock n' roll records still.” You can watch that segment above.

The Brothers Hanson also gave some advice to today’s teen stars, from Justin Bieber to Miley Cyrus to Jonas Brothers to Selena Gomez. Which Disney star do they think needs to focus “more on music, less on boots”? Watch the video below to see which teen singers of today they think will still be around tomorrow.

Boy bands come and go. Some split up and members go solo, oftentimes with not much success. A few remain intact, surviving the influx of new groups. One of them is Hanson, composed of brothers Isaac, Taylor and Zac. Of course, it helps that they are siblings. Blood is thicker than music, you know.

A backgrounder (furnished Funfare by Dayly Entertainment which is producing the Hanson concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on March 30 and at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City on March 31):

Natives of Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Hanson brothers have been making music together for nearly two decades. Their 1997 debut albumMiddle of Nowhere introduced their out-of-the-blue, soul-inspired brand of American pop-rock ‘n’ roll to the world. It sold more than 10 million copies and spawned the trio’s hit singles MMMBop, Where’s The Love, I Will Come to Youand Weird.

Also in 1997, they released their Christmas album Snowed In, followed by a studio album in 2000, This Time Around.

In 2003, the brothers put up 3CG Records, their own company and, in 2004, released their album,Underneath (Penny & Me and Lost Without Each Other were among the hit singles from it). In 2007, they released the album The Walk.

They have just released their fifth album, Shout It Out.

“It showcases not only the music of Hanson but many aspects that have allowed the band to survive and stay relevant,” said Zac in an exclusive phone interview with Funfare. “The album is about being alive, and the contrasts we are faced with. We’ve come from a generation leaving the analog world and moving into an interconnected culture at risk of forgetting where it came from. The album tries to put together those pieces, but with a bit of melody to back it up.”

Here’s the rest of our interview:

You and your brothers Isaac and Taylor have been in the business for more than two decades. What keeps you together, considering that so many bands have come and gone?

“Even when we were kids, we were saying that we’d be together even when we were old and gray. We’ve been doing it together for years and years and we’re still enjoying it. Life goes on and things can be harsh, but we stick together whatever happens.”

Isn’t there any professional rivalry which is common among siblings in showbiz?

“You know, at this point there shouldn’t really be as much sibling rivalry. We’re not perfect, you know, we also have our faults but we’re not guilty of sibling rivalry or professional jealousy. We have struggled with each other; no one knows each other better than we do. It’s hard. Sometimes we are hard on each other but thank God, it has been a good job, it has been a good life, and we really appreciate it.”

You started in the business as teenagers. I suppose you all have families of your own now and you live apart from each other. How do you keep in touch away from music?

“The funny thing about us is that in a lot of ways we’re still together even if we’re not working. We run our label so we spend a lot of time together even if we’re not going on tour.”

Do you always agree on what kind of music you should be playing or how things in your office should be run?

“We often agree more than disagree. You know, we grew up in the same house and on the same kind of music. We play different roles in our company, each one of us runs his own area.”

Who’s the most senior among you?

“There’s no official first, second and third. We are seven siblings in the family and I’m the youngest of the three who are in the music business. We three are the only ones who have pursued music. We have a sister who’s studying art and a brother who’s studying acting.”

Why did you call your band simply Hanson and not something else?

“We did consider a few names but we decided to just use our surname as the name of our band. It’s easier to remember, isn’t it?”

Could you tell us more about your new (fifth) album, Shout It Out?

“These songs on the album go back to our roots; they are the kind of songs that we grew up on. The album kind of traces how we have grown as a band. It’s titled Shout It Out because that’s exactly what a singer wants when he wants the whole world to listen to his music — you know, to really shout it out…loud! We’ve had a long, happy journey for 20 years and we’d love to share it with the world.”

You performed in Manila a few years ago. What surprises are in store for your Filipino fans on your concert on March 30 and 31? Of course, if you tell, they won’t be surprised anymore, hehehe!

“There will be lots of surprises. There will also be a little bit of everything — our old songs, our new songs from our latest album. We expect our fans to sing along with us and enjoy the music.

Pop band Hanson is going to perform at the Little Lake Musicfest this summer during the final show of the season on Aug. 25.

The trio of brothers from Oklahoma - Zac, Isaac and Taylor - is best known for the 1997 hit song MMMBop and has sold millions of albums worldwide.

The band’s other hit songs include This Time Around, Strong Enough to Break, Where’s the Love and The Walk.

Hanson has been making music together for nearly two decades.

On their current fifth studio album Shout It Out, released on their independent label 3CG Records, they deliver soulful, melodic tunes known as R&B-flavored pop-rock. The album, produced and written exclusively by the band, includes special guests: Funk Brothers bassist Bob Babbitt, who played on some of Motown’s greatest hits, and horn arranger Jerry Hey, who worked with Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and Earth, Wind and Fire.

The first single, Thinking ’Bout Somethin’, one of the songs that features brass, offers lyrics about putting a loose lover in her place underscored by a huge chorus.

Kiss Me When You Come Home touches on heartfelt lyrics about the simpler connections that keep a relationship going.

Carry You There harkens back to The Walk, with its message of rising above your troubles.

And I Waited brings in a tougher edge signaling a change in mood from with a four-on-the-floor kick drum and a darker lyrical undertone.

Meanwhile, Little Lake Musicfest is set to start its 26th season of free entertainment in Del Crary Park on June 30.

The outdoor concerts at the Fred Anderson Stage run Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

Isaac Hanson said, "We actually very rarely cancel a show but got really sick at the end of last year, but this was part of another U.S. tour and so we just finished a whole run of shows across Canada."

They then made their way back to this area. They've been going now for more than 15 years, as a band and a family, which can help when it comes to carrying the same tune

Zac Hanson said, "There's probably some genetic assistance in there somewhere. I think vocal cords probably sounds more similar and blend better, but we've only been in a band with each other, so it's probably hard to know."

Hanson's popularity exploded in 1997 with the release on "MMMBop," but they've really had a combination of a solid fan base and critical acclaim.

"We do it first for ourselves and secondly for the fans hoping that they love what you do, and then you just stay focused on that every night," said Isaac.

And yes, they're still popular today. Outside Northern Lights, fans waited for hours to get first row seats, based on the number in order of purchased tickets.

"They are to help us stay in line so when the doors open, we can all proceed in to the show," said fan Colleen Bridges.

In the meantime, there's a bit of camping out, but it was all for the songs they hope to hear

"Never Let Go, Crazy Beautiful, Give a Little, In the City, MMMBop, everything," said another fan.

Hanson also is in the business side of the music business; they run their own label, 3CG Records - a move based on the response to the state of the music industry these days

"You've seen massive shrinkage of every different side of the music business just because of the way that the culture is being spread and shared and those things, and I think as a band, we just found that the best place to be was running our own label, doing it ourselves and finding those partnerships we could rely on," said Zac.

And as Hanson had a successful night here in the Capital Region, that continues with more scheduled sold-out shows.

Feb. 14, 2012 - Many people from all over the world voiced their reactions to the death of pop Diva Whitney Houston. Included in those mournful posts were from Oklahoma musicians such as Reba McEntire, Nathan Followill of Kings of Leon and Zac Hanson of the pop group Hanson.

Another group of individuals who mourned the loss of Whitney Houston were her co-stars in the movie Waiting to Exhale.

Houston starred in Waiting to Exhale in 1996, her second movie effort following The Bodyguard. Actor Forest Whitaker directed the movie and she starred alongside Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon. Houston also sang the movie's theme song, "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)."

Hanson’s Saturday night show was a high energy, non-stop, 100-minute rollercoaster, a tribute to the band’s enthusiasm. The interactive concert had the crowd jumping, singing, clapping, dancing, and—perhaps most significantly for a band who still boasts much of their boy band appeal—grabbing the hand of their favourite Hanson brother.

That’s not to say the band hasn’t matured: they’ve actually gone electric, adding new riffs to old songs, incorporating horns in new songs. They will soon launch their own brand of beer, Mmmhop, evidence of the band’s maturation – but more on that later.

“What’s been really cool about the last 15 years is you have countless opportunities to get out there and to make another record and to have a different relationship with your audience,” Isaac Hanson, the oldest brother and the band’s guitarist, told me before the show. “You are always looking for that kernel of insight. The great thing about it is that that kernel is new every single day.”

The opening song, “Wait It Out,” had fans singing the title line of the group’s most recent album Shout It Out, their fifth studio release. During the band’s cover of The Beatles’ “Oh Darling,” youngest brother and drummer Zac Hanson held the syllable “Oh” while Taylor Hanson, middle brother and pianist, chugged a bottle of water. The band’s oldest songs appeared near the end of the show – but even “Mmmbop” now includes electric riffs, and the song benefits from this new sound.

“I think we all just love what we do in one form or another,” Isaac said about keeping their sound fresh. “We’re all just really excited to do it. The enthusiasm isn’t lost on us.”

Although they have released four albums since Middle of Nowhere hit radio waves in 1997, Isaac maintains that the purpose behind their music remains the same.

“I think as a songwriter you are always just trying to have an honest emotional connection with somebody no matter what the song specifically is about. Sometimes it’s just about celebrating life, sometimes it’s just about challenging yourself to rise to the occasion. Sometimes it’s lamenting the loss of someone… You’re always just searching for that kernel of honest emotion and a unique way to tell it every time.”

The brothers, especially Taylor and Isaac, also love beer. They will launch their beer brand Mmmhop, an India Pale Ale, in both the US and Canada in the spring. Isaac said that, while the beer’s name is “tongue in cheek,” the idea sprang from the band’s collaborations with local chocolate and coffee artisans.

“We really loved what these people did, and then that love for what they did inspired us to say, we should do something with this chocolate maker or coffee roaster, because they’re really good at what they do,” Isaac said. “We found a way to put it out with our own spin on it.

“The beer is our reflection of our appreciation of an art form, and the spirit it puts you in.”

The brothers have branched out in other ways: the new video for “Thinkin Bout Something” belatedly showcases their awkward dance moves.

Isaac explained why they did not bust a move in Thunder Bay: “We are not dancers, as has been proven by all the years of music videos and whatever. We’ll leave the pop and lock to Usher and Bieber, with all of their agility.”

No matter the quality of the band’s — and the audience’s — dancing, what Isaac calls the “carpe diem” attitude behind many of their songs gets infused into live performances, leading fans, literally, to jump out of their seats.

I saw Hanson 14 years ago. Yes, I was bat-shit crazy for the three goldilocks (especially Zac- "The funny one!"). I called a number in the back of Tiger Beat Magazine that promised I could speak with Hanson. That number turned out to be some prerecorded shit from Barbados, obviously, and cost my parents about $80.

My musical tastes have changed and surely, I thought, theirs had too. Wrong. The predominately female crowd screamed even louder than I had remembered, groups of gals with homemade Hanson shirts were in full force, and the pushing and shoving to get closer to the golden gods was something I hadn't experienced since, I don't know, Hanson in 1997.

Free from former back up musicians a la "The Mmmbop" era, the three brothers competently played catchy pop tunes about love, longing, heartbreak, and well, mmm...bopping. Zac and Isaac each took a turn performing a solo acoustic song, while Taylor (let's face it, the star) sat back and watched.
