Taking a cue from SoCal’s multi-day music festival Coachella, Los Angeles’ Sunset Junction Street Fair will feature six stages and over 100 acts including DJ sets by Peaches and Lil Jon and headlining performances by Butthole Surfers, Butch Walker, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Bobby Womack and Hanson.
The event, being held on August 27 and 28, has taken place in LA’s trendy Silver Lake neighborhood since 2001, when Elliot Smith headlined. Over the years, many indie artists, both local and national acts, have played the fest including Sonic Youth, Guided By Voices, Silversun Pickups, Greg Dulli, Beachwood Sparks, Rilo Kiley, and, last summer, Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zeros and Fitz and The Tantrums.
Although primarily known for rock bands, organizers have also been diligent about offering diversity to the musical confab, reflecting the multi-cultural neighborhoods that surround the famous corner. This year’s Sunset Junction is no exception as soul legend Bobby Womack and Latin-fusion collective Ozomatli take the Hoover Stage. Over at the Edgecliffe Stage, Rooney and Hanson bring the pop while The Californian offer their own brand of surf-rock. Metal and hard rock rules on the Bates Stage, presented by nearby club The Satellite (formerly Spaceland), which includes successive sets by Helmet, Melvins and Butthole Surfers.
New to the festival this year: a local showcase stage at Mexican joint El Cid and a Hotel Café stage featuring the likes of Cary Brothers and Walker, a longtime regular of the Hollywood singer-songwriter haunt. Other lineup highlights include sets by Tapes ‘n Tapes and Art Brut along with newcomers Gayngs and He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister.
